Crank & Boom Craft Ice Cream | Distillery District

Crank & Boom Craft Ice Cream | Distillery District

One thing I have come to discover quickly is that Crank & Boom Craft Ice Cream is a Lexington staple. First introduced to it at Parent & Family Weekend at the University of Kentucky Tailgate Party, I was instantly hooked. Their eclectic flavors true to the bluegrass state are second to none. They have Bourbon & Honey and Bluegrass Sundown which contain a small amount of alcohol. Then there are seasonal flavors like Apple Cider and Spice Cookie Crumble. Their ice cream lounges are located in fun, industrial chic digs.

After getting a taste at the tailgate party, I just couldn’t wait to check them out in person at the Distillery District. As it was part of our outing for the day, I had my entire family in tow and we decided to try a sundae as well as a sampler flight of four.

Just deciding upon a sundae in at of itself was hard, let alone deciding on which four flavors to put on the sampler. Ultimately my daughter decided on a Peanut Butter Cup Sundae and we each picked a flavor for the sampler.

Local Sourcing for Ingredients

While the staff was busy scooping up our order we had the chance to chat a bit about their flavors and local sourcing. When possible they source all ingredients locally like Kentucky dairy from JD Country Milk, blackberry jam from Windstone Farm, honey from Hosey’s Honey, and strawberries from Eckert’s Boyd Orchard. In fact, they were buying to many strawberries each year that Eckert’s put in an additional field of strawberries just to keep up with the orders from Crank & Boom. Let’s not forget the bourbon they use – it’s from Buffalo Trace Distillery.

Peanut Butter Cup Sundae

Our sundae was superb and rich in flavor. Peanut butter sauce, blondie crumbs and chocolate fudge sauce over vanilla bean ice cream proved to be pure heaven. Honestly, I am not sure how one person could eat this by themselves. Of note, I went back up and talked to the staff to find out that their sauces in this sundae are home made.

Sampler Flight of Four

If you are out with a group of friends, I would encourage you to take the route of a sampler flight of four. We ended up each choosing a flavor and came up with Bourbon & Honey, Bourbon Ball, Raspberry Sorbet and Vanilla Bean. It took all four of us to finish this delight. It’s such a great way to explore the rich, eclectic and exotic flavors of Crank & Boom.

Bourbon, Stout and Irish Cream Ice Cream Delights

They have a few flavors that contain alcohol. Bourbon & Honey, Coffee Stout, Irish Cream Dreams, and Bluegrass Sundown. These contain less than 1% actual alcohol in them. All other flavors have zero alcohol in them. Their location in the Distillery District does serve alcohol for their ice cream cocktails and bar menu. Their ice cream cocktails include: Stout Dreams, Berry White, Salted Caramel S’Mores Barrel, Coco-Boom and Limon Pie concoctions.
