Kentucky has more navigable miles of water than any other state in the US besides Alaska. As well, Kentucky is the only state to have rivers that border three of its sides – the Mississipi to the West, the Big Sandy to the East and the Ohio to the North. Take a day or even a weekend and explore some of those waterways. I recommend starting with a boat rental on Lake Herrington in Danville, KY.
Lake Herrington is an easy drive from Lexington and you can spend the day on the water with a boat rental from Chimney Rock Marina. They have beautiful pontoon boats that easily accommodate 10 people. Pack a picnic lunch, fill the cooler, pack some fishing poles and head out onto the water.

While there are several marinas on the lake, Chimney Rock is by far the nicest and has the most to offer. You can even dine in their restaurant which has a covered patio with fantastic views of the lake.
Herrington Lake is a 2,335-acre (9 km2) artificial lake located in Mercer, Garrard and Boyle counties in Kentucky, United States. The lake was created by Kentucky Utilities’ damming of the Dix River, a tributary of the Kentucky River, in 1925 to generate hydroelectric power.
If you have an entire weekend to be able to enjoy the lake, check out Airbnb for cabin and house rentals in the area. This will get you on or close to the water. We found a beautiful two-bedroom, two bathroom condo right on the lake with access to a pool, fishing and even a boat slip.
