Get Off Your Axe at Battle Axes | Hatchet-Throwing Venue

I’ve heard of hatchet-throwing venues but never lived close to one so I was super excited when I heard Battle Axes was opening in the Lexington Distillery District. We made a day out with the family and started at Goodfella’s for Pizza, migrated to Crank & Boom for Ice Cream and then worked it all off at Battle Axes.

The Distillery District is adjacent to downtown and within walking distance of Lexington’s finest hotels, Rupp Arena and the Lexington Center. At the James E Pepper campus you can find restaurants, bars, distilleries, breweries, dessert, live music, an arcade and Lexington’s only axe-throwing facility.

Our group had a private pit where our pit boss taught us how to throw. He knew the fine, intricate details of what we were doing wrong and how to fix our style. I have to say it was a bit frustrating at first when that axe wouldn’t stick in the wall, but holy moley when it did it was exhilarating. It’s an addiction, you just want to throw again and again and the hour flies by.

I had with me my 18 year old daughter and my brother. My brother mastered the throwing first and then it was a head-to-head competition between my daughter and I to see who would stick the wall first. It didn’t matter if we hit the target, we just wanted the axe to stick in the wall. Hannah nailed it and actually hit the target after some coaching from the pit boss. I followed shortly thereafter and then it became a competition to see who would get the first bulls-eye.

There are two options for pits. You can try the walk-in pit for $10 per player for 30 minutes. If you have at least two players, you can get a private lane for $20 per player for an hour. Battle Axes also recently added a Mobile Unit which you can have at your event or home party. Minors ages 13 – 17 are permitted daily until 6pm, after that you must be 18. Close-toed, non-heeled shoes are required by all participants.

Canned beer, hard cider, and hard seltzer plus soda and bottled water are available along with snacks.

Battle Axes is perfect for a family outing, date night, girls night out, bachelor or bachelorette party as well as fundraisers and corporate events. They have leagues in January, April, July and October. Happy Hour is Monday – Thursday with $5 off reservations and BOGO 1/2 off drinks. There is event a College Night on Sunday and Ladies Night on Thursday.

  1. It’s good to know that it can be frustrating to not have the axe stick at first, but when it does it’s a great feeling. My spouse and I want to try going on some double-dates this year and axe throwing sounds like a fun activity. We need to find a place nearby that has a good atmosphere for adults.
